The Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department team up with the North River Family YMCA Aquatics Program are combining efforts to bring the City’s competitive swim team, the “Chattanooga Sharks” to Hixson, North Chattanooga, and the surrounding areas. Chattanooga Sharks” is a USA Swimming competitive team and open to all interested youth ages 6 – 14.
The new swim team effort between the North River Family YMCA and the city’s aquatics program is an expansion of the partnership that was
developed by Larry Zehnder almost ten years ago to provide a quality swimming facility and program for residents in this area of the city.  According to the City’s Aquatics Coordinator, Peggy Grall, “The North River YMCA offers a discount to city residents to use the pool during open swim times. We are pleased to be working with Kim Stuart and her aquatics staff now on the swim team because this will make our programs available to more swimmers.” The competitive swimming program will start on Tuesday, September 2nd and have both team practices and stroke development. Practices will be held at the South ChattanoogaRecreationComplex Pool on Monday and Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.and at the North RiverYMCAPoolTuesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m.  Stroke Development, a pre-team program teaching the four competitive strokes will be offered at these times and locations:             South ChattanoogaPool        Monday and Wednesday       4:15 p.m.                               North River Family YMCA   Tuesday and Thursday           5:00 p.m.       “Although we are starting now, the competitive swimming season runs from September through March and kids can join the team at any time,” Ms. Grall adds. Ms. Grall explains “our mission is to teach, train, and motivate competitive swimmers and promote swimming as a fun, healthy sport that encourages building new friendships and family participation. During an Olympic year, interest in aquatic programs generally increases by 25%. We want everyone to know about the city’s swim team which is now in its 4th year…and who knows?!...maybe we’ll discover the next Michael Phelps!  Costs to participate include a registration fee for USA Swimming membership and t-shirt as well as nominal team fees.

For more information call: Peggy Grall at 697-1385 or Kim Stuart at 855-3517.
